A Day At The Races – 17th May 2012

Well….Not even all three of the Marx Brothers turned up to these races! Caroline (Harpo?) and I ( Groucho? ) arrived at Vire on a less than gloriously sunny day, although luckily the drizzle stopped in time for the start of the racing. We were the sole Anglophones but happily, there was a good crowd that created the right sort of atmosphere.

After enjoying lunch we began the serious business of deciding which horse to bet on. Before putting on our bets we went outside to study the horses. Caroline tended to back horses to win which, with two winners, led to a goodly sum being gained! I was more conservative and bet on horses to be placed, but even this led to a modest sum being accrued. but the greatest thrill came from watching our chosen horses careering down the course to the winning post ahead of the field, being loudly cheered on by the lucky punters.

In addition to the racing, the main hall had stalls selling a variety of attractive fashion items, such as jewellery and clothes. Midway through the afternoon there was a fashion show to showcase the clothes; including lingerie and a wedding dress.

We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves but would be keen to know whether this event just did not interest people or whether there was any other reason for the lack of members at this event.
