Visit Utah Beach Museum

March 27

Dear Member !

Enjoy an unusually varied day with us, history, delicious food and some goodies along the way. This visit provides the opportunity to learn about the events of the D-Day landings at Utah Beach in 1944 and to become acquainted with some of the history of St Mère-Eglise and its local attractions which are within a short walking distance of the restaurant.

Use the morning hours to discover on your own some points of interest in the small town of St Mère-Eglise
The Church is in the centre of the village which was the first town to be liberated by the allies in 1944 and is famous for being where one unfortunate paratrooper entangled his parachute on the spire. The church interior is delightful and serene and well worth a visit.
– The smaller US Airborne Museum, nearby the Tourist Information Office on the opposite side of the car park.
– Almost around the corner from the church on the D15 is a biscuiterie (Le Biscuit de St Mère-Eglise) with a substantial tea, coffee and chocolate selection and a foodie gift shop attached. Our chosen restaurant is almost next door to the biscuiterie.

And if you wish you could include a visit to the local Cotentin farm-museum, 1 rue de Beauvais 50480 SAINTE-MERE-EGLISE, they offer a guided tour for a group. It is merely a ten minute walk from the restaurant.
Meet outside at 10:00h. Cost of the guided tour for a group (approx. 1 h) €5,00 per person.
Notice: The guided tour will need to be pre-booked.

In the afternoon there will be a guided visit in English of the Utah Beach D-Day Museum. The Museum at Utah Beach is a 15 minute drive from St Mère-Eglise on the D67, Routes des Alliés, located on the site of the D-Day landings on 6 June 1944. It is designed to offer a memorably immersive experience of the events of that strategic battle with an impressive collection of artifacts, vehicles, testimonies and photographs. Following a renovation in 2011 the museum provides sweeping views of the huge beach and now includes a very rare example of a B26 bomber, the type of plane that was used to bomb the area, flying from north to south along the beach, just minutes before the arrival of the landing troops. Our tour will be right at the beginning in English, last 45 minutes and is followed by an award winning documentary film (12 minutes). The museum closes at 18:00h. There is a book and gift shop.
Walking shoes are recommended if you wish to walk on the expansive adjacent Utah Beach.
Meet at the Utah Beach Museum entrance at 14:10h. Cost incl. tour: € 8 per person.

Lunch we will have at the L’Auberge John Steele. (https://www.auberge-john-steele.com/)
It is a restaurant with an excellent local reputation for its cooking and it also receives exceptional reviews from tourists for its warm welcome, ambience and hospitality.
Menu: There will be a choice of two entrées, two plats and perhaps three desserts.
Cost Lunch @ € 14,90 – 2 courses, @ € 18,50 – 3 courses – individual payment at restaurant. This a little more expensive than our usual selections but we anticipate a splendid meal.
Meet in the restaurant entrance hall at 12:00h.

Car share is available.
